Running Street Fighter III on your PC

1192773550_rspicsRyu5

Street Fighter 3 is a fantastic game. Utterly incredible for a rainy afternoon - and since summer 2007, it's been possible to play on the PC. If you want to try it out, all you need to do is follow these simple instructions.

1. Download CPS3 Emulator

I tried a load of different emulators, including the latest MAME, and I had trouble getting the game to work with any of them. (If any of you have any tips, please post them in the comments!). Anyway, this is the one that I've tried and tested, and it works perfectly:

http://nebula.emulatronia.com/descargas.php

The specific file download you want is the one under the 'CPS3 Emulator' heading; at the time of posting, the specific name and version was:

CPS3 Emulator 1.0a Capcom Play System 3 Emulator

Unzip that to your chosen directory.

2. Create CHD and Roms Directories

In the same directory into which you've unzipped the emulator, you need to create two folders. The first should be entitled 'CHD' and the second 'Roms'. Now you need to create a folder inside 'Roms', entitled 'sfiii3'.

3. Download Street Fighter 3 CHD and Bin files

This is one area where I can't help you too much; but there are two files you need.

1. 33s000.chd

This needs to go in the CHD/ folder.

2. sf33usa.bin

This needs to go in Roms/sfiii3/

4. Finding the above files

This is an area of some difficulty, I'd prefer not to link you to the exact places I found these files, as technically you need to actually own the game to use them. Here is a big hint though:

Do a google search for those file names, there should be Filefront (or other hosting sites) which have them, at the very top of your search page. 33s000.chd is about 64mb, and sf33usa.bin is about 512 kb, but you do need both before the game will run.

5. Running the game

This should be the easiest part. Simply load up emulator.exe, select Emulator > Load Rom, and then choose "Street Fighter III Third Strike: Fight for the Future (CHD).

6. Enjoy!

The emulator works perfectly for me, along with my logitech keyboard and gamepad, so I hope you have as much luck! As I said previously, if anyone has alternate guides for different emulators, please post them here; but avoid directly linking to roms if you can, please.

    5. I have to say I've only tried SF3. I run SF2, too, but that's through MAME (which is also relatively easy to do)

    6. i found all the information and started playing third strike with others online the same day i started looking for it in the net.

drag 2 files into the main sf3.zip file, put the sf3n.zip in the roms folder, use mame32v0.117 and that's it ladies.

      i dont use nebula.

if you know how to read this, and cant get to play 3rd strike online, save up those quarters and take a computers/internet course or something. common sense usually works pretty good.

no need to thank me, i do this as a public service.

    12. hey can someone help me i'v done all the steps on this site but my one still doesn't work, when i try to load the rom it says
      FAILED 8876086A. D3DFMT 22 Depth 71
      Unable to initialize video subsystem

      Posted by gus | December 22, 2007, 2:26 am
    13. Gus, looks like a direct3d problem, but that's all I can tell - perhaps try upgrading your video drivers/directx.

Alternatively, you'll probably get a good response on the Nebula forums: http://nebula.emulatronia.com/

If all else fails, perhaps you could try running it under MAME, using the guide in Senslfield's comment. (Sorry I can't be of much more help)

      Posted by Daniel | December 22, 2007, 2:32 am
    14. gus i had the same problem when i tried it on my desktop but it worked fine when i used it on my laptop. it seems that your system is noe capable of running the programme, like daniel siad it will be your video drivers try on a more up to date system

      Posted by john | December 22, 2007, 2:50 pm
    16. I have to admit I've yet to get it working with MAME, but I haven't tried the guide linked to by Senslfield - I'll give it a shot in the next day or so and report back.

      Posted by Daniel | December 22, 2007, 3:57 pm
    17. I got this rom working fine, however, there is a lag in gameplay and the sound tends to skip

      Posted by john | December 24, 2007, 10:01 pm
    19. Daniel i wasn't talking about third strike but games in general, as i have the mame emulator and some roms but can't get the thing to work at all, i put all the roms in the roms folder but when i do the audit it still doesn't work - it says files missing, any help will be appreciated.

anyway thanks a lot for all your efforts very kind of you indeed once again many thanks.

    20. Ah, well I don't know if it varies from game to game, but the only one I've tried so far is Street Fighter II: Championship Edition. I think I just put the downloaded zip file into /Roms and it worked perfectly. (the rom I downloaded was a zip with a ton of .bin files inside).

I've yet to try SFIII, probably have to wait till after christmas, been a bit hectic in the last few days. ;)

    21. Hi Daniel, i just wondering, what is ur PC specs?

i am using Ge force 7300
      Vista with Direct X 10 i think… if not its 9
      core 2 duo 2.4

am i able to play sf 3 with these specs?

      thank you

      Posted by Hoosen | January 5, 2008, 3:37 am
    22. I'm currently using:

      Geforce 8600GT
      Intel T7250 Core2 Duo
      3GB RAM

All running under vista, on my laptop.

The lowest specced system I've tried it on is:

      Geforce 6800GT
      Athlon 64 3400+
      1GB RAM

It seems to work perfectly on both - so I'm guessing it should run fine on your machine. I don't know how many resources the emulation takes, but all things said it's a fairly old game now, so I doubt it's too demanding.

    23. Hello Daniel,

thanks for sharing this and it works, and I just wanted to know, does this method also work for street fighter iii and SFiii 2nd impact and do you know what is their each chd and bin file name?

      Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2008, 8:00 pm
    24. Hello,

I wish I could help, but I'm sorry I have no idea which files you need for those games. If it helps, here is the list of games which seem to be supported by Nebula:

    25. Thank you for answering, Daniel *^-^*
I wanted to play Street Fighter III and Street Fighter III 2nd impact on the CPS3 emulator, but don't know the chd and bin name for the CPS3 emu version.

      Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2008, 9:52 am
    26. You must create the proper files inside the the emulator dir one names chd thats where the 33s000.chd file goes then roms/sfiii3 thats where sf33usa.bin goes search google for the files there the first link it took me 50 tries before i relized i forgot the 3 at the end of the sfiii3 file. runs full speed on my pen d 920 gforce 6800 2 gig ram
