I believe this is Sun Microsystem's new strategy to get people to buy StarOffice, Sun's proprietary office suite. Their clever marketing scheme is to get people to try the Open Source version and hope they'll be inspired to buy the proprietary version.
Personally though, I prefer to stick to Open Office, and I'm sure most of the Linux community will agree with me.
